Accessorise This
By Tanusree Chakraborty

“Accessorise and re-define the beautiful woman in you,” is the style message that Simran Gupta, creator of bLinGz Fashion Necessities wants to give young fashionistas.

The brand designs scintillating modern neck-pieces, earrings, bracelets, anklets and key-chains. The designs are a fusion of Indian handwork and western sensibility. “Smart cocktail wear” is bLinGz’s mantra. They make artificial accessories and use beads, stone, pearls, metal (raw-material), interesting fabrics, etc.  All this is sourced from different cities so that clients have an interesting and diverse variety to choose from.

Simran completed her degree in Banking and Insurance and was campus-placed with a renowned investment bank but soon she realised it was not her true calling. She quit her job and followed her passion for Accessory Designing. She founded an accessory brand on 18 October, 2010. Her sister Priyanka, 26, joined her six months later.

Designing was a passion as well as a hobby for Simran. While pursuing a course in Accessory Design, she created a page on the web and named it ‘bLinGz’.

“I don’t use the typical shades of pink, blue or green while designing. I use neutral colours and also customise the pieces,” says Simran. One can team them (accessories) with any outfit, be it a jeans and a tee, a gown or a little black dress. The duo also creates custom pieces to go with a specific outfit, keeping the occasion in mind.

“We cater to a different mass altogether. The accessories start at R250. My sister and I brainstorm and adapt our ideas while designing. We do not peep into style magazines to copy concepts,” says Simran.

For the 24-year- old designer, fashion is simple yet chic, sophisticated yet fun. As accessories can make or break a look, she recommends not over-accessorising. Even a simple outfit can look great if teamed up with the right pair/interesting accessories she says. But comfort still remains a priority with the designer. “I never follow current trends blindly and prefer to pick something only if I am comfortable wearing it,” says Simran.

The sisters have a different way of approaching design which means that buyers have the best of both worlds. The accessory line is just seven or eight exhibitions old. Its display at a popular eatery in Mumbai received excellent reviews attracting B-town celebs and TV stars. They also displayed their collection at the Bangalore Fashion Week in July 2011 and went international with an exhibition at Lagos (Africa) on 8 October, 2011. Simran considers it the biggest move for the brand.

bLinGz Fashion Necessities has a Facebook page where you can see some of their collections. Their next exhibition will be held in November 2011 at Lucknow. A display in Canada is also on the cards in December or early January. Simran’s journey has been unexpectedly good so far with no complaints in the work sphere. The sisters are looking to expand but right now their focus, they say, is Mumbai and Lucknow.
